There are over 700,000 cases of child abuse in the US every year. Over 850 Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) serve the needs of these children and their families. Their mission is to protect and support children, collaborate with professionals and engage the community in ending child abuse and neglect.
A Children’s Advocacy Center is a child-friendly facility in which law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical and victim advocacy professionals work together to investigate abuse, help children heal from abuse, and hold offenders accountable.
A crucial element of the case management process is the recording of forensic interviews. The forensic interview is a critical first step, and it serves two purposes:
- Minimizing children’s trauma in the retelling of their story to the myriad of individuals and institutions that become part of their healing process.
- Serving as evidence for the judicial system handling the case and hopefully preventing others from falling victim to the same perpetrator.
