Project Description

Project Brief

TeamMates Mentoring Program is a one to one, school-based mentoring program. Giving Tech Labs was initially engaged by the Raikes Foundation to meet with the leadership team of TeamMates in October 2017 with the intent to evaluate the opportunity to harness matching technologies, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to algorithmically suggest the best mentor/mentee fit from the available database.

There are not enough leads in the funnel to be matched with children awaiting guidance. It’s a classic issue of supply and demand. Since demand is outpacing supply, TeamMates needs first to evaluate the mechanisms used for recruitment, measure the ROI and then lead efforts to increase the pipeline and conversion rate.

The Raikes Foundation and Giving Tech Labs, financially sponsored this project.

“We realized that while improving matching via technology is an essential element, the system is limited not by the ability to do the automated pairing, but by the lack of mentors to meet the demand. Let’s rethink the go-to-market inside-out!”

Assessment

Before launching a new technology or venture, we evaluate nine different marketing, operations, monetization and/or technology dimensions on a scale of 0 to 100 and 70% of them must be at or above 70 to move forward. The following bars represent the assessment done before starting Teammates.org 2.0 GTM project.

Market Need, Opp Size and Competition: 93%
Ease to code, pilot and take to market: 84%
IP and Data Value; Sustainability: 77%

Results

Giving Tech Labs identified six key opportunities for TeamMates to win in the mentorship space by rethinking their go-to-market approach, core value proposition, messaging and digital marketing channel, as well as identifying a B2B model to gain leverage.

We propose as phase 2, to create a mobile tool to help to recruit, train and onboard mentors and phase 3 would include the development of a web-based tool to expedite and improve the matching of mentors-mentees for long-lasting relationships.

TeamMates currently provide a mentor to over 7,500 youth in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Wyoming. Their mission is to become the gold standard of school-based mentoring programs and serve 12,000 youth by 2020.
